The town of Fairplay CO is a historic and picturesque community located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Known as the “official trout fishing capital of Colorado,” Fairplay offers a wealth of outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, hiking, skiing at nearby resort, and hunting.

The town is also home to local charming shops, coffee shops, bars and restaurants, many of which are housed in beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings.

In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Fairplay hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a Fourth of July parade, a summer music series, Burro Days and a fall bazaar.

With its small-town charm and stunning scenery Fairplay is an idyllic place to call home.

Fairplay CO Name Origin

The town of Fairplay CO was named for its location at the “fair play” or center of various mining districts in the area during the late 19th century. The town was originally settled by gold prospectors in the mid-1800s during the Colorado Gold Rush, and it quickly grew into a hub of commerce and transportation.

In the early days of the town, disputes over mining claims and property rights were common, and the term “fair play” was used to describe a fair and honest approach to settling disputes.

Over time, the town came to be known as “Fairplay Diggings” that later was changed to “South Park City” and then back to “Fairplay” and the name has stuck ever since.

Today, Fairplay CO is a growing community that celebrates its rich history.

Fairplay CO History

The history of Fairplay CO dates back to the mid-1800s when gold was discovered in the area. The town was established in 1859 by prospectors who came to the area in search of riches during the Colorado Gold Rush. Fairplay quickly became a hub of commerce and transportation, serving as a supply center for the surrounding mining districts.

The early days of the town were marked by conflict and violence, as disputes over mining claims and property rights were common. In response, the local miners and business owners formed a vigilante group known as the “Fair Play Club” to maintain order and enforce justice in the area.

As the gold rush subsided, Fairplay CO became a center for ranching and agriculture, with dairy farming, sheep herding, and timber harvesting becoming important industries.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town also served as a stop on the stagecoach and railroad routes connecting Denver and the rest of Colorado to the mining towns of Leadville and Breckenridge.
