Copper Mountain is a centrally located ski resort in Summit County, Colorado. Only about 75 miles (120 km) west of Denver on Interstate 70. It is also within close proximity to other nearby ski resorts such as Breckenridge, Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin, all just west of the Continental Divide. Taking I-70 in a west direction will get you to another resort Beaver Creek within 40 mins.
The ski town is divided into three villages: East Village, The Village at Copper (AKA Center Village), West Village (formerly Union Creek).
The elevation rises to 9,700 feet above the sea level.
The resort opened in November 1972. The mountain has been operated by several owners since then.
The resort hosted the World Cup tour in 1976 with four alpine ski races: slalom and giant slalom for both men and women.
Ski resort received its first detachable chairlift in 1986 called the American Flyer lift, which is a high-speed quad running from Center Village to the summit of the I-lift. At this ski resort, you will be able to use total of 24 lifts, 148 trails and ski on 2527 acres of terrain.
Beginning with the 2011–2012 season, the resort became an official U.S. Ski Team downhill training venue.
Keystone CO was founded back in the 1970s by Max Dercum and his wife Edna. They moved from Pennsylvania, because Max got a job as a U.S Forest Service ranger. They have purchased the Black Ranch that was a stop for miners in the late 1800s. When the electricity came in the 1940s they converted it to the Ski Tip Ranch which was one of the first ski lodges in Colorado.
In 1946 Mr. Decrum got together with group of investors and created the Arapahoe Basin.
In the early 1950s the Ski Tip Ranch and Arapahoe Basin became a success and that’s when Max decided to start the Keystone project.
The Ski Valley USA cooperation was created in 1967. They developed the ski area and successfully secured required permits from the Forest Service.
In 1969, with the help of investors from Keystone International Inc was formed.
